Ban Phakeo Trek

Embark on a two day trek to a remote Hmong village and one of the country’s most serene jar sites, experience the locals’ mountain life, and inspect war-time architecture.

 Schedule

Day 1

The tour departs at 8:30 am from Phonsavanh. Transfer by van or songthaew to Ban Thalin, a traditional Hmong village. Here the village guide will join the group. The trail ascends and winds along the mountain ridge of Phou Xan. During the walk the guide will point out medical plants and explain about traditional forests products. A Lao style picnic lunch is taken on the way. The trek passes several areas with unfinished jars and quarry sites before you can explore the main jar site. The Phakeo Jar site counts more than 400 sandstone jars with fine examples of stone lids, including some animal bas relief. In the late afternoon the group arrives at Ban Phakeo, a Hmong community located on the upper slopes of the mountains. A traditional Hmong dinner cooked by the villagers marks the end of an exiting day and the guests will fall asleep at the village lodge for a good night’s rest.

Level of difficulty

Walking is easy to moderate with some steeper ascents/descents; second day passing through the river and crossing the waterfall several times.

What to bring

1 change of cloth, sandals for village, good shoes for hiking, sarong for bathing (required or women), flashlight, sunscreem / hat, camera.

Day 2

After sharing breakfast with the host community the group departs on a forest trail. The trek continues along rice fields, crosses rivers and ends at the Tad Kha Waterfall. At this scenic spot lunch will be taken and you can go for a dip in the cool pools. The trail climbs up the waterfall through lush jungle and after one hour you reach the top. A further short ascend takes the group to Tajok village, the final stop of this tour. On a walk through the village you can see how war scrap from the Indochina war is used in local architecture and you will discover fences and vegetable planters in bomb casings. The group returns to Phonsavanh in the late afternoon.

Group size

Group size is a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 guests.
